METHODOLOGY & DATA SOURCE

  • Source: ERA5 reanalysis (ECMWF) — the reference dataset of meteorology, ~31 km grid, 1940–present; downloaded via the Open-Meteo Archive API.
  • Period: 1960–2024 (65 years). Fire season: northern hemisphere Jun–Sep, southern hemisphere Dec–Feb.
  • Daily variables: max. temperature (Tmax), min. relative humidity (RHmin), max. wind, total precipitation, FAO-56 reference evapotranspiration (ET0).
  • VPD (vapour pressure deficit, the leading driver of vegetation drought stress): es(T)=0.6108·e^(17.27T/(T+237.3)), VPDmax = es(Tmax)·(1−RHmin/100).
  • Fire-weather day: the days of the season exceeding the 90th percentile of the local 1991–2020 climate normal fire-weather index (0.4·heat+0.4·dryness+0.2·wind) — i.e. the top decile of local fire weather. Region-relative → comparable.
  • Trend test: Mann–Kendall (non-parametric monotonic trend; Kendall-τ and two-sided p, normal approximation), slope: Sen's (robust, median-based). These are the standard climatological methods.
  • Significance: ★★★ p<0.01 · ★★ p<0.05 · ★ p<0.1 · ns = not significant.
  • Complementary layers: the official wildfire-risk layer (USDA WHP / EFFIS / CWFIS / NSW) and the Sentinel-2 NDWI vegetation dryness on the map, along the grid.

THE LAYERS
Grid — the electric transmission lines (OpenStreetMap), coloured by voltage.
Vegetation analysis — from Sentinel-2's 12 bands, the amount and dryness of vegetation along the line = fuel. The colour of the lines.
Official fire layer — EFFIS (Copernicus): actual burnt areas mapped by satellite (currently in Europe).
Risk score — vegetation × fire weather, a time-aware halo around the lines; updates as you drag the slider.
Fire weather — daily index (0–100) from the weather (heat + dryness + wind). Not temperature.
